Capturing moments full of beautiful little details
What color is the water?
My children now answer that it is glowing red at the moment because a house in Italy is reflected in it. There are also shades of yellow and green. When I observe my surroundings, I discover a world full of color and wonderful little details..
I am Sonja Wythe, an artist and designer based near Hamburg. Painting has been a loving companion to me since early childhood. I began my professional journey studying communication design and worked as a graphic designer in agencies as well as a 3D artist in film productions. Today, my focus is entirely on painting. I draw inspiration from my treasure of memories and photographs, which I have collected with curiosity throughout the years during my travels.
Spending time with my children constantly reminds me of the small details that are waiting to be discovered in our world – a place full of wonder and imagery. As a lecturer, I also share my fulfilling practice and, alongside technical skills, pass on my love for painting. In this way, I awaken curiosity for color, contrast, and motif, encouraging others to preserve their own personal memories.
Through my work, I aim to express my perspective on our wonderful world – moments of stillness, shimmering light, colors emerging in the darkness of night, the faint trace of color visible when light appears at its last strength or at the first moment of the day in the landscape. My medium is mostly canvas with acrylic paint. Using brushes, palette knives, cloths, and my fingers, I create both delicate details and large, vibrant surfaces. The paint is applied in opaque or transparent layers, developing its luminosity most intensely through multiple applications. A reduction of the color palette and a focus on few surfaces can be seen in my graphic works.
